The Art of Public Speaking, ninth edition, Stephen E. Lucas (no disks required, used is fine)
This course is designed to provide both a practical introduction to the fundamental principles of public speaking and a forum for practicing public speaking skills. Through a variety of strategies: discussion, group work, reading, lecture, and presentation, you will learn the processes by which effective speeches are conceived, prepared, and delivered.

On the assigned speech day, sign up on the board in the order that you wish to speak. For Speeches 1, 2, 3, and 4, give your professor your working outline prior to speaking, using the sample provided as a guideline. Outlines must be typed and are worth 10% of your total points. Bibliographies must be submitted in APA or MLA format and properly cited when necessary. All speeches must be presented in order to pass this course (Sample Outline . Speech grades will not be discussed in class. Wait at least 24 hours, go over the comments on your evaluation form, then, if you wish to speak to the professor about your grade, make an appointment.
Extemporaneous style is used in this course. Therefore, speeches must not be written out word for word. Instructor perceived reading will result in a 25% grade reduction for that speech. You will speak from a delivery/key word outline (pages 247-249) on a limited number of note cards. The instructor will restrict the number of cards per speech.
The instructor will give written critiques to all speakers. The class will present oral critiques as time allows. All students are encouraged to ask questions of the speaker. Extra credit (5 points each, up to three) may also be earned by attending speaking events (approved by the instructor) and by submitting a brief critique of the event.
You are also required to critique a fellow student and yourself for the persuasive speech this semester. (self critique)
****Outlines and bibliographies are due the day of the speech. Late work will not be accepted.****
All written work must be typed and proofed for errors. Errors in spelling and grammar will reduce your grade. Written work with ten or more errors will receive a zero (0). You must submit all written work directly to your instructor. Neither your instructor nor the Communication Department will accept responsibility for your papers that are left on desks, in mailboxes, or given to others. Correct format and neatness of work are expected and required.
Your attendance at all classes is necessary, as you will be participating at all times either as a speaker or a listener/critic. Therefore, only 3 unexcused absences are permitted. After 3 absences ten points will be subtracted from your final grade for each absence. A student will be automatically dropped from this course after missing 25% of the total classes.
H1N1 flu: Students who are told to self-isolate should contact instructors by phone or e-mail to make them aware that they will be away from class and should discuss with instructor how to keep up with assignments. Remember that you may be too ill to study or be productive academically while you are recovering from the flu. (offical info from the College)
In addition, if you miss a scheduled speech, any make up speech is at your instructor's discretion and will carry a 20% penalty for that assignment. Therefore, a make up speech can receive no grade higher than a C+. There is no automatic right to make up a speech. For those students who maintain a perfect attendance record, a bonus of five points will be added to the final grade.
Students that miss or will need to miss class to do the following: (From the Absence Memo Office)
* Come to 67 George Street (white house next to Stern Center) to discuss absences and fill out the appropriate forms.
* Call 953-3390 and ask for Constance Nelson if they have questions.
* We do have the forms online at: http://www.cofc.edu/studentaffairs/general_info/absence and they also can be faxed to our office at 953-2290.
* They will need documentation for health, personal or emergency situations.
* Athletic Teams and school sponsored trips will have documented lists of students participating on our letterhead as early in the semester as we get the information from the organization. We would like all information on scheduled outings to reach us at least two full weeks in advance. We will then turn the information back to the coach or advisor. The students themselves are responsible for getting this to their individual faculty members.
Think of this class as your job. Call and leave a message or e-mail me if you cannot make it to class.
Graded in-class work may not be made up.
OTHER CLASS POLICIES:
Respect for the professor and your fellow students requires that you turn off and store cell phones, iPods or other music devices, remove hats and sunglasses during class. Computers may be used for note taking, or researching current discussion. Other uses will result in losing your computer for that class and will be returned at the end of class with a "Tardy" mark entered for your attendance. Any exceptions needed must be cleared with the professor.
Students are expected to keep current in the reading of the text, even if chapter material is not directly covered in class. Plagiarism Policy: Any student caught cheating on an exam, using (plagiarizing) someone else's speech topic, outline, or notes, or lifting information from sources without citing those sources (another form of plagiarism) will be given an automatic "F" for the course.
Disabilities accommodation statement: Any student who, because of a disability, may require special arrangements in order to meet course requirements, should contact the instructor as soon as possible to make such accommodations as may be necessary. The deadline for student notification of the instructor concerning the need for such arrangements is September 25 , 2009.
