(Chapter 15 & 16)
We all argue, just about everyday. Sometimes its about simple things,
for example: What movie should we see? Sometimes the arguments are more serious, such
as ethical arguments or political arguments. Sometimes your arguments could
save someones life, for example, when you try to persuade your friend to give
you the keys when you know she/he is drunk. How often do you win these arguments?
If you do, what methods do you use? When you dont, do you know
This persuasive speech will help you to develop skills so that you will learn
how to effectively persuade. It will also help you recognize fallacies (bulls---)
when you hear them.
DRESS PROFESSIONALY FOR THIS SPEECH.
Your primary goal is to change or reinforce an existing attitude or belief
of your audience and/or to move them to action.
Your secondary goal is to learn how be an ethical speaker and a critical
listener. You will critique one speaker as well as yourself. These critiques are due one week after you speak.
- You must take a stand and make an argument. Your speech must
be change oriented, i.e., you are arguing for a change in the status quo.
There should also be resistance and /or a divided audience, therefore, audience
analysis is essential in the assignment. Poll your audience in advance to
find out their attitude towards your argument.
- Facts, figures, and expert testimony add substance to your message
- Examples and narratives help the audience to understand the
human dimension of the problem (pathos/mythos).
- You must establish your credibility to the audience (ethos).
- Each main ideas must contain logos, ethos, and pathos. (See supporting a point example.)
- Read Chapters 15 & 16 in preparation for this speech.This
speech will require considerable research and skillful use of the methods
Only one person, per topic, per side is permitted. Therefore, it is necessary
to clear your topic with the professor.
Outlining your Speech:
- Submit a computer generated Preparation Outline
on the day of your speech as per the example in your text. All supporting material used in the speech must be included
on the preparation outline's bibliography. Attach the first page of your and pages used in the speech to your preparation outline.
- Your bibliography of at least five sources that support your argument will be on a separate
sheet of paper and must be in APA or MLA style.
Supporting Materials :
- Finding supporting materials: Use your own knowledge
of the topic first; then find outside published and/or interview sources to
back up your points and enhance your credibility as a speaker. You must include
a minimum of five sources in this speech. Only one personal
interview will count as a source. General references do not count in this minimum. Do not use Wikipedia. Be sure your sources
are the 4 R's: recent, reliable, relevant, representative. Look for previously
printed sources, such as the ones on Infotrac, before going on the Internet.
If Internet sources are used, they must be unbiased and reliable.
- Citing your sources: Cite your sources orally in the
speech if they are specific facts or figures, if the material is controversial, if you quote or paraphrase a person., or use someone else's ideas. Cite
simply and clearly: the source and date, or the person and her/his qualifications

Put all visuals on an flash drive or CD. Put the visuals on the desk top before speeches begin. No U-Tube or videos allowed.
- Delivery :
Extemporaneous style (conversational, planned, outlined, not
read) is used.
Write a Speaking Outline (Page 263-265) on note
cards (8 or less). Practice at least three times, aloud and
on your feet from this outline. Time yourself; if the speech is too long or
short, adjust it. Remember, this outline contains less material than the full
outline. Turn these notes cards in after you speak.
Time: Five to eight minutes. Seven point penalty for going over
